Govt has to take care of helpless Gopalganj twin babies: HC

The High Court today ordered the authorities concerned of the government to take proper care of two helpless one-month-old twin babies in Gopalganj as their mother died earlier and their father is now in jail in connection with a case.
The district officer under the directorate of social services and the deputy commissioner of Gopalganj has been asked to comply with the verbal directive and the attorney general’s office has been asked to give update about the issue before the HC next week.
The HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury delivered the instruction following a newspaper report on the plights of the twin babies and their 13 years’ old brother.
Supreme Court lawyers Hamidul Misbah, Nazia Kabir and Sifat Mahmud Shuvo placed the news report before the HC bench seeking necessary directive.
Deputy Attorney Tanim Khan told The Daily Star that he contacted the DC of Gopalganj and communicated the HC instruction to the officials concerned.
“So far I know that the DC of Gopalganj has given Tk 10,000 to the maternal grandmother of the babies through a social service official for buying their food and other essentials. I have also asked the officials to take care of them properly until their father gets released from jail,” he added.
According to the newspaper report, 13-year-old Sajjad Mollah’s twin sisters were born a month ago in Gopalganj’s Kotalipara.
Their mother died a week after giving birth.
Sajjad’s father Jamal Miah, who is a day labour, was imprisoned in a political case.
According to news reports, the situation has put Sajjad in a spot to take care of his three sisters, including two newborn twins.
